Cosmos atrosanguineus (chocolate cosmos) is a member of the Asteraceae family. This perennial exhibits a spreading branched growth habit and is characterised by its deciduous foliage. It has a hardiness rating of half-hardy (unheated glasshouse/mild winter [-5 to 1ºc]) and is hardy in coastal/mild areas except in hard winters, though it is at risk from sudden (early) frosts. May be hardy elsewhere with wall shelter or good microclimate and can survive with artificial winter protection. It features a flower fragrance.
When fully mature, Cosmos atrosanguineus can reach an ultimate height of 0.5–1 metres and a spread of 0.1–0.5 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers a south–facing, west–facing, or east–facing aspect and an exposed or sheltered position. It thrives best in chalk, loam, or sand soil types and should be placed in full sun.
