It has a hardiness rating of hardy (very cold winter [-20 to -15ºc]) and is hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe, with many plants grown in containers becoming damaged unless given protection.
When fully mature, Nyssa sylvatica can reach an ultimate height of 12 metres and above and a spread of 8 metres and above. For optimal growth, it prefers an east–facing, south–facing, or west–facing aspect and a sheltered position. It thrives best in chalk, clay, or sand soil types and should be placed in full sun or partial shade.
