Cycas revoluta (Japanese sago palm) is a member of the Cycadaceae family. This evergreen shrub exhibits a tufted growth habit and is characterised by its evergreen foliage. It has a hardiness rating of half-hardy (unheated glasshouse/mild winter [-5 to 1ºc]) and is hardy in coastal/mild areas except in hard winters, though it is at risk from sudden (early) frosts. May be hardy elsewhere with wall shelter or good microclimate and can survive with artificial winter protection.
When fully mature, Cycas revoluta can reach an ultimate height of 1–1.5 metres and a spread of 1–1.5 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers a south–facing or east–facing aspect and a sheltered position. It thrives best in loam soil and should be placed in partial shade.
