Blechnum spicant (hard fern) is a member of the Blechnaceae family. This fern exhibits a tufted growth habit and is characterised by its evergreen foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy (very cold winter [-20 to -15ºc]) and is hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe, with many plants grown in containers becoming damaged unless given protection.
When fully mature, Blechnum spicant can reach an ultimate height of 0.1–0.5 metres and a spread of 0.1–0.5 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers a south–facing, north–facing, east–facing, or west–facing aspect and an exposed or sheltered position. It thrives best in clay or loam soil types and should be placed in full shade or partial shade.
