Carex pendula (pendulous sedge) is a member of the Cyperaceae family. This grasse exhibits a clump forming, tufted growth habit and is characterised by its evergreen foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy (very cold winter [-20 to -15ºc]) and is hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe, with many plants grown in containers becoming damaged unless given protection.
When fully mature, Carex pendula can reach an ultimate height of 1–1.5 metres and a spread of 0.5–1 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers an east–facing, south–facing, or west–facing aspect and an exposed or sheltered position. It thrives best in clay, loam, chalk, or sand soil types and should be placed in full sun or partial shade.
