Asarum europaeum (asarabacca) is a member of the Aristolochiaceae family. This perennial exhibits a matforming growth habit and is characterised by its evergreen foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy (very cold winter [-20 to -15ºc]) and is hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe, with many plants grown in containers becoming damaged unless given protection.
When fully mature, Asarum europaeum can reach an ultimate height of 0.0–0.1 metres and a spread of 0.1–0.5 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers a north–facing, west–facing, or east–facing aspect and a sheltered position. It thrives best in clay, loam, or sand soil types and should be placed in full shade or partial shade.
