Ginkgo biloba (maidenhair tree) is a member of the Ginkgoaceae family. This conifer exhibits a columnar upright growth habit and is characterised by its deciduous foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy (very cold winter [-20 to -15ºc]) and is hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe, with many plants grown in containers becoming damaged unless given protection.

When fully mature, Ginkgo biloba can reach an ultimate height of over 12 metres and a spread of 4–8 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers an east–facing, south–facing, north–facing, or west–facing aspect and an exposed or sheltered position. It thrives best in chalk, clay, loam, or sand soil types and should be placed in full sun.
